School Program
School Program:

Our School Programs provide school staff and administration with concrete tools necessary to meet the needs of their school community when coping with death or dying. Our goal is to provide services in a pro-active, non-emergency school setting. However, we are often called upon in emergency situations. Some of the possible emergency scenarios in school settings include:

• A student dies suddenly in a traffic accident over a weekend.
• A student’s parent dies.
• A staff member dies suddenly (at home or in the classroom setting).
• A student is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
• A student’s younger sibling dies of cancer.
• A student dies by suicide.

How does the school administration and staff respond?
What are the immediate, short and long term effects of such a tragedy?

• To the family whose child or parent died?
• To the students whose classmate and friend died?
• To the staff whose student died?
• To the student whose sibling died?
• To the students whose classmate and friend is suddenly coping with the
death of a family member?
• To the entire community?

Willow House provides a variety of support and educational services to school communities. These services are developed to meet the specific needs of each individual school and in some cases the special circumstances prompting the needs and call for service. Our special services for school communities include:

• Staff development – in-services, workshops, institute days, teacher academy programs, trainings
• Family association education – PTA and PTO workshops, meetings
• Staff consultation – with PPS staff and other staff who are working with and providing support to those students, staff and community members coping with death and dying
Crisis intervention – debriefing and staff support, working with your crisis team to provide auxiliary services, development of plans and programs for immediate service needs as well as assessments for need and development of services for longer term support

Contact Willow House to discuss how we can develop a program for your school.
